There is no black-and-white answer to this question. This is what our inspection manager, Tom Horner, who has over 26 years of experience performing inspections, had to say. It is never recommended to paint a synthetic sling. However, it is correct that no ASME statement specifically says you cannot do this. Ultimately, it is the inspector's duty to determine if the paint is, in fact, an issue. A light dusting from overspray is probably not an issue, but has the application of their paint caused other issues, such as stiffness or a lack of flexibility in the sling? I have failed synthetics due to this, which is most notable for paint shops and paint booths. We highly recommend never painting a synthetic sling simply because it is the introduction of a chemical. We also do not recommend the practice of marking your slings to show that they have been inspected. So, I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, so I have two answers for you depending on what you meant. If you are saying you hand-splice a sling and then put a carbon sleeve over the body of the splice, then NO. You don’t want to do that. We have already performed the “splice by opening up the s strands and 3 strands + core and performed the splice back onto themselves, forming the eye. We then have small tails on the Mechanically spliced sling that get tucked around the neck, and the carbon steel sleeve is pulled over them and hammered into place prior to putting them into the swagger. If you are asking if you can have a sling with a hand-splice taper and conceal eye on one end and a mechanical splice eye on the other, then YES. That is being used quite heavily with ironworkers to have the mechanical splice eye in the hook of the crane (the same end that has the tag on it to protect the tag from damage), and the hand-splice end is being used to choke the load and does not have a carbon steel sleeve on it to obstruct the slings from pulling out from under the load easily. So recap - Do not put a carbon steel sleeve on a hand-spliced taper and conceal-eyed sling. But you can have different style eyes on the ends of one sling.

Most slings are proof tested to 2 times WLL before they go out. Technically an overpull would not pull the sling from service unless afterwards it does not pass a visual inspection. The key thing to remember here is that you do not need to pull test slings as part of a periodic inspection, but having a competent and qualified person perform and document those periodic inspections is required and very important. All employees using the slings should be trained to perform visual inspections daily before the sling is put into use, and they should be trained to spot removal criteria at any point during a shift.

@@LiftingandRigging Yes, that is how we operate. But some "expert" in our department is pushing annual 200% Load Testing. 🙂

It is not a requirement as part of a periodic inspection though. A better practice would be to hire a 3rd party who specializes in rigging inspections to perform and document your periodic inspection. Mazzella would be more than willing to help with that as well. One thing to keep in mind here is also "load test" vs "proof test." Synthetic slings are not proof-tested. Proof-testing them would be like you said, an overpull. Not great for a synthetic sling. Many synthetic slings are also batch-tested as the slings are manufactured to a proven process.

@LiftingandRigging 3 wraps past the junction point is what I've been told. I've never used them around OSHA but MSHA inspectors have always approved them.

Most, if not all, wheels used in underhung applications these days are dual-type, flat and tapered. This allows them to be used on W (flat tread beams) or S (tapered flange beams). However, when dealing with patent track, the wheels need to be designed specifically for patent track (they will be made of hardened material) and will always be flat.

Yes. ASME B30.9 requires a design factor of 5:1 for synthetic slings. ASME B30.9-5.6.2 Proof Load Requirements (a) For single- or multiple-leg slings and endless slings, each leg shall be proof loaded to 2 times the single-leg straight-line hitch rated load. HOWEVER, you should never load any sling or piece of rigging hardware past its Working Load Limit.

D/d ratio is important and should always be taken into consideration. For complete information on D/d ratio, please refer to the website wireropetechinicalboard.org. The rated capacities of grommets are based on a D/d ratio of 5:1, where “d” is the body diameter of the finished grommet. You should consider a reduction in WLL for anyone using a cable-laid grommet with a D/d ratio of less than 5:1.

Marine is definitely one of the best applications for the SS 316 turnbuckles. Corrosion resistance is of supreme importance in marine applications. Really, it's anywhere with water. Wastewater treatment plants, for example, are places where they get used frequently. 2nd to Marine applications would be hazardous chemical places. The chromium-nickel alloy has resistance to many chemicals such as sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. On another note, these can also be used in high-heat situations. The SS 316 turnbuckles are suited well for high-temperature applications as well. We do see them used a little bit in construction.
